American Nike was founded in 1964 by Phil Knight and Bill Bowerman and is a latecomer to the competition, but quickly became a major player on the sports stage. Bowerman was a coach who was eager to create a lighter and more comfortable running shoe. Knight was a track athlete who shared Bowerman’s ideas and was willing to come up with the best running shoe possible.
The company’s first product was the iconic “Nike Cortez,” a running shoe that featured a new “waffle sole” design that provided traction and comfort. The shoes can be seen in the movie Forrest Gump, where Tom Hanks’ character wears them.
Cortez was inspired by a running shoe Bowerman had seen in Mexico and was intended to be a lightweight, comfortable option for distance runners. The shoe was an immediate success the only thing it needed was a catchy name. They originally called it ‘Aztec’ in honor of the Olympic host city, but Adidas ruined the Bowerman’s plans by releasing the Azteca Gold. They had to change the name at the very last minute to Cortez to avoid legal issues. As Bowerman put it later, ‘That Spaniard who kicked the s**t out of the Aztecs!’.
All three brands are now global giants, with Nike being the largest. Adidas and Puma are still family-run businesses, while Nike is a public company.
